Crops Grown in Baggao

Baggao, as is true to the whole province of Cagayan, is primarily an agricultural community. This is shown by the fact that majority of the population depends upon agriculture for their livelihood and income. Of the total 17,133 households of Baggao, 15,094 or 88.1 percent are engaged in farming. The basic crops of the municipality are rice, corn, peanuts, fruits, vegetables and rootcrops. Other crops grown include commercial crops like sugarcane, bananas, coconut, coffee and pineapple.


a)         Rice

                            Agriculture is the municipalities main economic activity and rice is the major crop. The survey conducted by the Municipal Agriculturist Office revealed that the municipality has 7,632 hectares of cropland devoted to rice production. Of this area, 55.13 percent or 4,284 hectares are irrigated while unirrigated cropland amounted for 2,904 hectares or 39.09 percent of the total riceland of the municipality. There are also 444 hectares upland or 5.81 percent of the total riceland.

b)         Corn 
                             
                         Corn is the secondary source of cereal requirement of the municipality. The aggregate area planted to corn according to the data supplied by the Municipal Agriculturist Office is 3,202 hectares or 27.8 percent of the total agricultural area of the municipality.  For 2004, the total production of corn reached 338,352 cavans with average yield of 57 cavans per hectare. This is valued at P135.34 million with a farm gate price of P8.00/kilo. 

c)         Vegetables and Rootcrops

The agricultural survey revealed that vegetables and rootcrops are also grown in farms and backyard. The total area planted to vegetables is 260.63 hectares. Vegetables grown include eggplant, ampalaya, tomato, camote, cabbage, upo, pechay, beans, garlic, onions, gabi and ginger.

d)         Fruit Trees

According to the data supplied by the MAO, there are 1,950 hectares occupied by fruit trees in the whole municipality. These include bananas, papaya, guava, avocado, starapple, tamarind and other fruit trees.
